During
the past 100 years, the world population and its demands on agriculture
haveincreased dramatically. However, during this same period,
the percentage of the population directly involved in agriculture
has decreased. Advances in science and technology allow for more
efficient and higher production to feed the rapidly growing human
population. Farmers today are often as comfortable at the keyboard
of a computer as they are at the steering wheel of a tractor.
As the population continues to grow at record rates, better ways
to feed the world in sustainable ways have to be developed and
implemented.
The Wells Fargo Family Farm nurtures a caring attitude toward
the environment by: (1) exploring environmental relationships
in fun ways through play-learning and self-guided discovery; (2)
interacting directly with animals and nature in a rural setting;
and (3) celebrating stewardship, adaptability to change, biological
diversity, seasons and cycles of life. Visitors are encouraged
to consider long-term solutions to local and global environmental
problems, including the human population explosion and its ever-increasing
demands on the earth's natural resources. The Wells Fargo Family
Farm is also a great place for kids to get up-close and personal
with domestic animals.
Although the buildings look like familiar Minnesota farm structures,
the interiors are very different. These buildings are designed
for the animals AND for 1.2 million Zoo visitors each year. Interactive
play-learning structures demonstrate grain management in grain
elevators, nurtured animal care on a farm setting and how cows
"manufacture" milk.
