Takin

Threatened Species

Description: Related to the musk ox and mountain goat, takins range in weight from 227 to 318 kg (500 - 700 lbs.) and stand from 76 to 132 cm (30 - 52 in) at the shoulder. They are 1.2 to 2.1 m (4 to 7 ft) in length from the head to the base of the tail. Their hooves are wide, with long, thick dewclaws that aid them when climbing rocks. Both sexes of the takin are horned, with the male having stouter horns. The fur color varies, depending on the sex and subspecies.
