Sun Bear

SSP Species / Endangered Species

Description: The sun bear is the smallest of all seven bear species. Its length is 1.0 to 1.4 m (3 to 4.5 ft.). Height at the shoulder is .7 m (2 ft.) with weight ranging from 27 to 65 kg (60 to 140 lbs). The sun bear is approximately 1/4 to 1/3 the weight of a black bear.

There are three other species of Asian bears. The sloth bear is found in India and Sri Lanka. The Asian black bear ranges in Afghanistan, Pakistan, northern India, Myanmar, extreme southern China, Korea, Japan and Indochina.The Asian brown bear is widely distributed across much of northern Asia although current population numbers in many areas are unknown. Of the four species, the sun bear is the most southerly ranging ursid in Asia.
