Tenrec

Animal Search A-Z

Spiny Tenrec

Finding shelter in a hollow within the baobab is a spiny insectivore that might make a meal of a hissing cockroach. While many tenrec species are restricted to foraging on the forest floor, the pygmy or lesser hedgehog tenrec is an agile climber.

Tenrecs hibernate for 3-5 months alone or in groups, waiting out the dry season. When the rains come, they emerge in search of soft-bodied plant and animal material including fruit, worms and insects.
