STCP field activities in Bukit Tigapuluh National Park include:
- Wide-scale
survey of the park for general topography, habitat types, wildlife
distribution and threats. Due to the large area to be covered
this activity is expected to require at least three months of
intensive fieldwork. An objective of these preliminary surveys
is to identify potential core tiger areas for more detailed
study (using remote cameras) and protection (by assigning Tiger
Protection Units).
- Survey
of national park perimeter and boundaries to identify illegal
activities, land-use patterns, extent of logging, defensibility
of the park and trouble spots.
- Exploration
and mapping of the national park and its surrounding area to
identify access routes for vehicles and foot patrols.
- Preliminary
development of a network of informants from sites around the
park that can provide constant feedback on developments, in
particular with regards to poaching and illegal trafficking
of tigers and their body parts.
- Development
of a report on conditions and needs in Bukit Tigapuluh National
Park with the goal of creating conditions for unhindered field
activities.
- Development
of a network of non-governmental organizations across Jambi
and Riau provinces from which support can be obtained for lobbying
provincial government, in return for up-to-date data on park
status and illegal activities.
- Development
of a quarterly informal newsletter for Jambi and Riau province
communities and provincial governments, showcasing activities
of the Program and providing a forum for the communication of
information relating to the changing status of the park.
