Cotton-top Tamarin

Cotton-top tamarins are listed as endangered by the IUCN Redlist and protected from trade by Appendix I of CITES. Their habitat is threatened by deforestation for farming, firewood and housing and from flooding due to hydroelectric development. They are also highly prized in the illegal local and international pet trade. Their remaining population is currently unknown.

In 2005, the Minnesota Zoo provided funds to Proyecto Titi (Project Tamarin) to conduct a census of the remaining wild cotton-top population to provide information indicating their true threat status. Through the breeding efforts of a Species Survival Plan in zoos this species currently has a stable captive population.
