This species is considered low-risk near threatened by the 2000
IUCN Redlist. It is protected from trade under CITES Appendix
II. The Fishing Cat is found in a range that spreads form northern
India, Sri Lanka, across Burma, the Thai peninsular and down to
Sumatra and Java, where records show the cat populations to be
in critical decline. It faces numerous threats to its continued
existence including habitat degradation from the draining of wetlands
for agriculture, human encroachment, hunting and collecting by
humans and water pollution. Captive breeding in this species is
scientifically managed through a studbook and Species Survival
Plan®.
