Red-breasted Goose

The red-breasted goose is listed as vulnerable on the 2000 IUCN Redlist and is protected from trade under Appendix II of CITES. It is one of the rarest Palearctic geese, and breeds on the tundra between the Arctic Circle and 78°N in west-central Siberia, mostly on the Taimyr peninsula. Disturbance from hunting and oil exploration may pose threats to the breeding population. Although the population was estimated at 88,000 in 1996, this species has come under increased pressure from the growing agriculture industry in its winter feeding grounds such as Bulgaria and elsewhere around the Black Sea. Increased industrialisation at some of its breeding grounds in the Siberian tundra around the Taymyr Peninsula threaten its continued survival. The species is also threatened by illegal and unregulated hunting particularly along its migration route through Russia.
