Glossary Term: Deer
SambarTigers prey on deer, mainly sambar and chital. Sambar, which are related to European red deer and American elk, are common prey in India. Chital, or spotted deer, also live in India.

In Siberia and northern China, tigers prey on maral, or Siberian wapiti. Yet another species of deer which tigers prey upon is swamp deer.

Tigers usually attack the largest available prey. Some samber grow as large as 300 kilograms (660 pounds). That's larger than many tigers! Chital are typically much smaller than sambar. Tigers only eat sixty percent of their prey, though, so most deer provide between 20 and 80 kilograms of meat.
