Application

A student intern MUST be receiving academic credit from, or fulfilling an academic requirement for an accredited educational institution. In most instances, student interns are upper division majors or minors in the areas of biological science, horticulture, pre-veterinary medicine, education, conservation biology or related disciplines.

Internships are unpaid and are 10 to 14 weeks in length and 30 to 40 hours per week.

Applications MUST Include:

  • Completed application form
  • Cover Letter including a paragraph explaining why you are interested in an internship at the Minnesota Zoo;
  • Resume;
  • Official Transcripts; and,
  • Letter of recommendation from an advisor or supervisor

AFRICA! Internship Summer 2013

The Africa! Exhibit is a seasonal exhibit that runs from Memorial Day thru Labor Day and is responsible for the management and care of African exotics. As an intern you may be working with giraffe, bongo, addax, wildebeest, and ostrich.

Summer internships:

Start and end dates are flexible; preferably mid to late May thru Labor Day. Work hours are 40 hours/week. College credit is required.

Responsibilities for the Africa Internship includes cleaning, husbandry, diet preparation, feeding and monitoring of our animals in the collection. Additional responsibilities include participating in giraffe encounters, Zoo Camp demonstrations and providing interpretive information about the animals in our collection as well as general information about the Zoo for Zoo guests.

Duties to include:

  • Assist in daily husbandry and management of the collection
  • Prepare and feed animal diets
  • Provide daily enrichment for the animals
  • Assist Africa! Keepers in giraffe encounters
  • Daily record keeping
  • Interact daily with Zoo guests and volunteers
  • Special projects as needed
