The Minnesota Zoo is deeply saddened to share the passing of Dr. Ron Tilson, conservationist and internationally-regarded tiger expert.
Dr. Tilson served at the Minnesota Zoo from 1984-2011 where he held leadership positions in research, biological programs and conservation. His significant achievements include creating the Minnesota Zoo's "Adopt-A-Park" program in Indonesia, initiating the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Program, and coordinating the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Tiger Species Survival Plan. He spent significant time in the field in Asia, Africa and Latin America, gave hundreds of lectures, wrote/co-authored over 220 scientific and general audience books and articles, and won numerous conservation awards. Dr. Tilson was also the inspiration for the AZA Species Survival Plan Tiger Conservation Campaign, conceived and overseen by his successor as Director of Conservation, Dr. Tara Harris.
The Zoo sends its deepest condolences to his family and remembers Dr. Tilson's contributions with gratitude and admiration.
