Still have buckthorn? You're not alone. If you have buckthorn on your property or want to learn about restoring native woodland habitat, this workshop is for you. Topics include: woodland structure and why gradual, prioritized buckthorn removal is preferred over an "understory clear-cut" (especially if garlic mustard is present); how to save high-value remnant plant species; how to avoid the most common errors made during buckthorn removal; how to prevent erosion on slopes; the importance of ground cover; how to protect plants from deer; re-planting with plants native to this region.

We're Inside Out!
Did you know the Zoo has 3 entrances; 1 inside and 2 outside? Depending on how attendance builds over the day there may be 1, 2, or all 3 entrances open! Beginning September 7 and throughout the construction of Heart of the Zoo-Phase One, we will have only outside entrances open. The inside entry will receive an upgrade. Preparations for this change include, but are not limited to, installing a heated air curtain on the main Tropics/Minnesota Trail door. We are committed to communicating construction information to our Members and you may always visit mnzoo.org for construction updates.
What Will the New Kid's Den "BEE"?
Aimed at confident walkers through age 5 (with accommodations for younger and older siblings), the new space will encourage exploration of a prairie setting as a pollinating bumble bee. Children will put on bee costumes and wander among flowers on their way to a hive play structure. For quieter moments, a reading nook occupies one end with comfortable seating and a soft floor for crawling.
Monday, September 6, is the last day to visit Kids' Den until the new and improved area opens next summer!
Recycle for Rainforests!
Have an old cell phone sitting in a junk drawer? You can make a difference by recycling out-of-use cell phone(s) at the Minnesota Zoo to benefit threatened animals of the African rainforests! Bins are located at all open entrances to the Zoo, or print out a mailing label and send it in for free to the Zoo's Recycle for Rainforests program. 100% of proceeds from this program go to rainforest and great ape conservation.
