Minnesota Zoo to Host Free Lecture on Bees of Minnesota
Apple Valley, MINN – August 16, 2011: The Minnesota Zoo will host a free lecture featuring the “Bees of Minnesota” on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. This lecture is part of the Zoo’s “Our Backyard/Our World Speaker Series” in the Zoo’s NEW Target® Learning Center. Bees of Minnesota will be led by University of Minnesota’s entomologist Dr. Marla Spivak and graduate researcher Mike Goblirsch, who will discuss the amazing world of bee biology and the importance of their ecosystem health in Minnesota. Dr. Spivak, a 2010 winner of a MacArthur Foundation Genius Award, leads the University's bee lab. Her research focuses on keeping bees healthy by breeding more disease resistant strains and promoting bee natural defenses. The Zoo’s “Our Backyard/Our World Speaker Series” is sponsored by Minnesota Public Radio. This free series introduces experts in local and global wildlife conservation and environmental issues. Space is limited for these free events. For a full list of the “Our Backyard/Our World Speaker Series,” visit: mnzoo.org/education/lectureSeries.asp.
