Apple Valley, MINN – April 19, 2013 – The Minnesota Zoo is thrilled to announce the hatching of its second African penguin chick and the debut of a new penguin webcam.
The second chick, which hatched March 21, joins an elder chick that hatched on March 2. Both males are endangered and are significant achievements for the Zoo, which opened the 3M Penguins of the African Coast exhibit in 2011.
Both penguins are being raised behind-the-scenes and growing very fast. The newest chick has gained 42 ounces in just under a month. The elder of the two (weighing 2.5 ounces at birth, now weighing over five pounds) is molting into his juvenile plumage. Swim time will soon be added to his day.
The webcam is available daily during the Minnesota light cycle, roughly 6:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. CST. As the light cycle expands with summer approaching, viewers will be able to watch the webcam during more hours of the day.
African penguins live and nest on the southwest coast of Africa, feeding primarily on anchovies, sardines, herring and pelagic goby. Like most other penguins, they are endangered in the wild due to oil spills, historical hunting, and habitat destruction. Most recently, catastrophic food shortages due to climate change has resulted in a decline in the global population.
The Minnesota Zoo is located in Apple Valley, just minutes south of Mall of America. For
