Minnesota Zoo to Become a Smoke-Free Facility
Outdoor Smoking Ban Takes Effect June 20, 2009

Apple Valley, MINN – June 17, 2009: – Beginning June 20, 2009, "lighting up" at the Minnesota Zoo will no longer be allowed.

Citing health concerns and the need for a cleaner environment, the Zoo will join nearly 2/3 of all zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) that are either entirely smoke-free or have designated smoking areas.

“Families visiting the Minnesota Zoo are engaging in a multi-generational, nature-focused, educational and fun experience,” said Minnesota Zoo Director/CEO Lee Ehmke. “That experience will be enhanced by this new non-smoking policy.”

The Minnesota Zoo prohibits smoking inside buildings, but has allowed smoking outdoors. The new policy allows smoking only in the main parking lots. Minnesota Zoo guests wishing to smoke may request a hand-stamp at the Guest Services Desk for easy access back into the Zoo.

Just some of the AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums across the country that are smoke-free include the Blank Park Zoo, Topeka Zoo, Denver Zoological Gardens, Los Angeles Zoo, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Abilene Zoo, Philadelphia Zoo, South Carolina Aquarium, Sacramento Zoo, and Seneca Park Zoo.

The Minnesota Zoo is located in Apple Valley, just minutes south of Mall of America.  The Zoo is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.  For more information, call 952.431.9500 or visit mnzoo.org. The Minnesota Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and an institutional member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
